2 Days Akagera Game Drive Safari
Overview
This 2-day Akagera safari takes you to Rwanda’s only savannah national park, Akagera National Park, located in the east on the border with Tanzania. Famous for its rolling hills, open plains, lakes, and wetlands, Akagera is home to the Big Five and many other wildlife species. On this trip, you will enjoy game drives and a relaxing boat safari on Lake Ihema for the perfect short safari experience.
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera & Afternoon Boat Safari
Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali early in the morning. After a scenic 2.5-hour drive, you will arrive at Akagera National Park. Upon registration at the park reception, begin with a short game drive, spotting giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants, and a variety of bird species.
In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Ihema, where you will see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and buffalo along the shores. The lake is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with species such as African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers.
After the boat safari, continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay inside or near the park.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive & Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive through the park. Drive across the northern plains, the best area for spotting predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas, along with large herds of buffalo and antelope. With some luck, you may also encounter rhinos, completing the Big Five experience.
Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park before continuing your game drive through diverse landscapes, from savannah grasslands to wetlands. In the late afternoon, exit the park and drive back to Kigali, arriving in the evening, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
